A number of clean coal technology (CCT) roadmaps have emerged recently because of increased interest and concern regarding future energy supplies. This report by the IEA Clean Coal Centre, the first in a series of three, concentrates on the technologies themselves. It contains descriptions and information on characteristics such as thermal efficiency and environmental performance, and assesses the technical and commercial status for each. The technologies include supercritical pulverised coal combustion (PCC), pressurised pulverised coal combustion (PPCC), circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC), pressurised fluidised bed combustion (PFBC), pressurised circulating fluidised bed combustion (PCFBC), integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC), IGCC-fuel cells, hybrid gasification/combustion systems and other systems and also zero emission or near-zero emission technologies with CO2 capture. R&D needs are identified.

The second report in the series (Clean coal technologies roadmaps) reviews the programmes in various countries, discusses economics and barriers and contains roadmaps for OECD and developing country areas. The third report (Towards zero emissions) will consider zero or near-zero emitting technologies in more detail.
