High capital cost is currently a disincentive to investment of new coal fired power plants. As a result of electricity liberalisation and increasing competition, plant managers of existing coal fired units are being forced to reduce costs without jeopardising the economics and overall efficiency of their plants. This report addresses different issues which need to be considered in the day to day operation of a power plant. These include the choice of coal, coal stockpile management and equipment maintenance. Long term strategies are also reviewed for:

- operation and maintenance;

- coal purchase and transportation;

- staff training;

- application of information technology.
